Getting Around

Nice: Castle Hill in front of the Bay of Angels

We enjoy using public transport (trams, buses, trains) as well as walking to get around. It's been fun navigating and experiencing life without a car. One thing we've noticed is that it feels like cars here more readily stop for pedestrians. And people here seem to rely on that, walking across a crosswalk even if a car is coming. I prefer not to be so bold at this point. Another thing we noticed is that there are many many 4 way traffic intersections with crosswalks, but no stop signs. So how do drivers as well as pedestrians navigate these busy intersections? Pedestrians have priority. At these intersections without stop signs, drivers must give the right of way to vehicles coming from their right. This is interesting to see in action and good to know as you try to cross as a pedestrian. (The philosophy is that fewer stop signs help drivers pay more attention, keeping people safer and traffic moving.). Public transport and a bit of walking has been great getting us anywhere we want to go. Nice is a big city, but I'm always amazed that we can get to the far end of town in less than a half hour tram ride.
